Have You Seen the Cost of Eggs Lately?

With the cost of eggs skyrocketing it’s becoming more and more difficult to get this kitchen staple. Luckily raising your own chickens is super easy. Here’s how to start your own chicken farm.

First things first you gotta check your local zoning and animal control laws to make sure that raising chickens is allowed in your area. Some cities and towns have restrictions like the number of chickens you can keep, the size and placement of your chicken coop, etc. Luckily here at Starkline we have a variety of different netting and coop options that fit a variety of needs.

After you're done checking your local zoning and animal control laws, next you’ll want to choose a breed. There are many different breeds of chickens to choose from, and each has its own unique characteristics. Consider factors like egg production, temperament, and climate adaptability when selecting your birds. If you’re looking to purchase chickens for eggs, here’s a good list of breeds known for their egg-laying abilities; Leghorn, Rhode Island Red, Australorp, Plymouth Rock, and Sussex.

Ok, you’ve decided which birds you want to buy, now what? Well, now you have to purchase supplies! You’ll need a couple of different items to ensure that your birds are safe and taken care of. One of those things is a chicken coop. You’ll need a safe, secure place for your chickens to live. You can either build your own coop or buy one. If you're not sure where to get started with coops take a look at our chicken coop section or chat with us on our website, we’d be happy to help find the perfect home for your chickens. Next you’ll want to purchase feed, waterers, feeders, and other supplies for your chickens. Based on the type of birds you picked you’ll need to research the specific needs of your chosen breed to ensure you’re providing them with the correct diet and care.

Now that we have the supplies it’s time to go out and purchase those chickens! You can purchase chickens from a local farm supply store, hatchery, or breeder. Consider buying day-old chickens if you want to raise them from the beginning, or older chickens if you want to start getting eggs sooner.

Raising chickens isn’t hard but you do have to make sure you have your ducks in a row before you start. Researching and getting the right supplies and livestock to fit your needs is the key to raising healthy egg-laying chickens.
